Mount Blue Knocks off Camden
The Cougars add the Windjammers to a rough week for defending champs
After three of the 2025 state champs lost on Thursday and Friday, it seemed like a good idea to get eyes on last year's 8-man Large school champs from Camden as they hosted Mount Blue in a B North battle. The Windjammers have moved to 11-man this year, but as we saw with Greely, that doesn't mean they'll automatically struggle.
But Camden's had some injury issues in the early going. There was a player on the sidelines with a cane–like an old-time wooden cane–which is cool, but sub-optimal for winning football games.
Mount Blue struck first, but Camden answered with back-to-back Braden Beveridge scores, including this catch from Ryder Lombardo.
But the PATs were blocked–both of them–and not by a tip of the finger, but sent back down the holder's throat. I think the second one hit the defender in the shin. Adam Vinatieri couldn't have made that kick. Never a good sign.
Mount Blue re-took the lead on Reed Cousineau's second TD of the game, then added one late in the half to take control.
Camden found a little life in the second half with a goal line stand, but gave up a safety on the first play. Mount Blue put the game away to move to 1-1 and drop Camden to 0-2.
That's 4 of the 6 state champions from the previous season losing on the same weekend. That seems like a lot! I imagine there's more than a couple seasons where 3 defending champs went undefeated the following year.

Power Rankings
I talked about this with Jay on the podcast, but I've made the first notable change to the rankings in a while. One of the quirks of the rankings is it struggles with early season blowouts of teams that might not be good. If a team's not great, they aren't worth a lot of points for the rankings, but we don't know how bad they might be until they've played some games where they don't get blown out. If a team loses 50-0 to TA or Bonny Eagle, that doesn't really tell us anything. But if they then lose to Noble 21-14, that gives us a much better idea of their true level.
What I've done is add a "blowout bump" that essentially gives a team the benefit of beating a slightly below average team from that class, instead of a team with no value because they haven't played enough games.

Presque Isle freshman Halle Esancy announced on Instagram she's transferring out of state to Masters Academy International. If that sounds familiar, it should. Earlier this summer, Oceanside's Olivia Breen transferred there.
Some sad news from southern Maine as Seacoast Christian coach Lee Petrie has passed away after a battle with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Petrie was an incredibly nice guy who did double duty coaching both the boys and girls teams at Seacoast Christian, back when they were in the MPA.
