Kicking Off the Cheverus Revenge Tour

Addison DeRoche and the Stags are on a mission

Kicking Off the Cheverus Revenge Tour

Last year, Cheverus entered the tournament undefeated, but fell in the Regional Final to Windham, 1-0, despite 14 strikeouts from Addison DeRoche. The Stags are on a revenge tour in, this, DeRoche's junior season and kicked off Saturday with Thornton Academy.

DeRoche was ready. She struck out 12 in a 5-inning no hitter to move Cheverus to 1-0 on the season.

Michael Hoffer was there.

DeRoche, Cheverus open in style with shutout of TA
PORTLAND—There isn’t an easy out in the lineup of the Cheverus softball team and the Stags’ hitting prowess was on display in Saturday morning’s regular season opener at Shea Field versus Thornton Academy. And if that wasn’t enough for the Golden Trojans to contend with, oh by the way,

On Friday, I went to Medomak Valley to test out the scoring app in person as the Panthers hosted Poland in softball. The app held up pretty well, overall, as Medomak put up 8 in the first inning and coasted to a 15-0 mercy rule win. Sidney Nichols struck out 8 in a 4-inning 1-hitter. Freshman Rheanne Simmons went 3-4 with 3 RBI from the leadoff spot.

And I found a couple of issues with the app I was able to clean up. Nothing like testing in real life.

Speaking of testing, I added a test feature to the baseball scorer, so you can try it out without impacting a real game. A couple of people mentioned that they'd like to play with it first, which is a thing I've done with the dozens of scoring apps I've tried out of the years.

But the big story from Friday was in Augusta where the Cony/Winslow games were interrupted after a threat of violence.

At about 2:30 p.m., as the baseball and softball teams were warming up at their respective fields prior to their 3 p.m. contests, Cony Athletic Director T.J. Maines said he was told by School Resource Officer Nick Sterling of a “credible threat to cause harm” at the games. Players, coaches and fans were immediately evacuated from the Cony High softball field and Morton Field at the Piggery Road baseball complex in Augusta.

YIKES.

Obviously this is a terrifying thing. I'm not even sure what you can say in this situation. The safety of players and fans is of the utmost importance and hopefully the Augusta police department can get to the bottom of this.

The games were postponed.

Mike Mandell has more.

Threat of violence forces evacuation at Cony baseball, softball fields

I saw a stat the other day that essentially said Peyton Pritchard is the best end of shot clock shooter in the league, but as we all know, he's even better at the end of halves and quarters.

Last night he did it again.

The day after the Red Sox fired Alex Cora and friends and shook up the organization, the Sea Dogs got their 9th no-hitter in franchise history.

A couple of weeks ago, the marathon world was rocked by a record-breaking performance at Boston. But that was nothing compared to yesterday.

The 2-hour marathon is the equivalent of the 4 minute mile. For decades, it was an open question of whether or not it was humanly possible. It had been done once before by Eliud Kipchoge in a stunt event with rotating pacers in an optimized environment meant to create absolutely perfect, impossible to replicate in a race conditions. But in a real race? That's a different story.

I never really bought into the impossible thing. People thought the 4 minute mile was impossible and that record is down to 3:43. Two hours is just a round number and people like round numbers.

The 2 hour barrier has been smashed.
Mind blowing performances at the London Marathon

What's more interesting is that Sawe ran a negative split with a 59:01 in the second half and that would have been the American half marathon record. He took a minute and 5 seconds off the previous world record.

Bonkers.

Messalonskee and Bangor's baseball teams are off to a strong start to their regular seasons. Both struggled against Edward Little (who is a really strong 0-2) and have obliterated everyone else, especially Bangor, who leads Class A in scoring thanks to a 23-2 win over Lewiston.

The Model thinks this is a toss-up. First pitch at 4pm.

The Model's picks for the rest of today's games are after the jump.
