Gorham Spikes TA

The Rams hand the Trojans their second loss of the season

Gorham Spikes TA

The Game of the Day lived up to the billing as Gorham once again beat Thornton Academy in volleyball, doubling down on a victory in September and ending TA's 9 game winning streak.

In the end it was 3-1, but not all 3-1 matches are created equal.

The defending champs trailed in all 4 sets, including a 10-point deficit in the second, but rallied in all 4. At one point they won 12 of 13 points to take the lead.

TA's loss drops their odds of getting the 1 seed from 63% down to 26%, opening an opportunity for Cheverus.

TA can still get the top spot, even if Cheverus finishes their season with a win over Bonny Eagle, but they'll need quite a bit of help. Like a lot of help. Gorham locks up a top 3 seed. They can move up, but they'll also need quite a bit of help.

Drew Bonifant was there.

The Rams look ready for the playoffs, prevailing in four close sets against the Class A-leading Trojans.

The football slate for Thursday didn't look all that strong and it lived down to those expectations. All 5 games had a spread of at least 12 and a half points and that game (Oceanside vs Brewer was the closest of the night and Oceanside covered with a 14-0 victory. Four of the five favorites covered and the one that didn't (Bonny Eagle) won by 21 vs a 21.4 spread.

In that game, the Scots went down 7-0 but scored 28 unanswered to drop Exeter to 3-4. Lucas Klehn ran for 4 touchdowns.

Remember a couple of years ago when an Instagram account "reported" (erroneously) that a team might face consequences for their margin of victory? (Again, it wasn't real)

Well, Marist Catholic in Oregon removed their coach this week after a 63-0 result didn't "reflect our school’s mission and values."

Now, this wasn't your usual 63-0 game. They didn't play the second half because the losing team only had 16 players and Marist Catholic was attempting onside kicks, including one up 56-0.

Often, what people call "running up the score" is just continuing to play against a team much worse than you. But, if you're attempting an onside kick up 56-0 in the first half, you're asking to get in trouble. That's some legitimate running up of the score.

There's no shortage of good games on the schedule for tonight. The combined point spread of the top 3 games in the Stax Index is under 1.5 points. Combined! And they've all got playoff implications. Over in A South, Noble is trying to keep their playoff hopes alive as they host SoPo. In B South, Falmouth will attempt to lock up a home playoff game with a win over Windham, while the Eagles are hoping to grab the 3 seed in A North.

And in Class C, Hermon kicks off the insane part of their schedule with a back-to-back against Greely and Leavitt. A lot of teams in C seem to have Leavitt and Greely scheduled in consecutive weeks this year (spoiler: it's gone badly for them).

If we go to the Playoff Calculator, we see Hermon and Greely both are in good shape to get a home playoff game and they both have an outside shot at supplanting Leavitt as the 1 seed.

The winner tonight moves into pole position for a top 2 seed. Hermon would move to 92% and Greely to 69%. The loser will have to make sure they win again to keep a home playoff game.

Let's home it doesn't rain too much.

The rest of the Model's picks for today's games are after the jump.
