The Game of the Day delivered on a lovely day in Portland

Cheverus took the lead late with a 25 yard strike from Colton Jewett to AJ Lauture, but Kennebunk answered when Giovanni D’Elia found Bradley Farrell on this deep ball to take the lead with roughly 2 minutes to play.

D'Elia may never have an easier throw for a touchdown in his life.

Cheverus had a late drive, but couldn't convert a 4th down in the final minute and Kennebunk held on for the win in what's becoming an insane B South.

B South is turning into one of those group play groups where everyone beats everyone and they have to go to the 5th tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Biddeford is sitting on top at 3-0 along with Marshwood, just the way we all projected 3 weeks ago.

On last week's overreactions pod, Jay Baines and I wondered if Yarmouth/Cape's over/under would make sense at 80. The over was the correct play.

There was so much scoring the first quarter took 55 minutes(!)

Cape led 40-30 at the half (almost to 80!) and then Yarmouth unfurled their sales and took flight. They rattled off 52 consecutive points in the second half to cover the 80 all by themselves. Stephen Connolly accounted for 7 touchdowns and 448 yards, 387 of them on the ground.

The line score (via Varsity Maine) is wild to look at.

I looked it up live on the podcast when it occurred to me and, yes, 82 points is more than the Yarmouth boys basketball team scored all last year in a very successful season that ended in the state championship game.

For a Cape team that went 1-7 last year and was only once within 21 points, this has to be both a burst of confidence and also a thought of what might be possible. They've made great strides since last year, but that second half is indicator of how far they have to go.

Or maybe Yarmouth is just really, really good.

Football rankings are updated. Portland and Yarmouth jump to third and fourth, respectively, with stellar Week 3 performances. TA goes to 1 with a dominant win over Bedford (NH). Lawrence joins the top 10 with a win over Skowhegan. And Westbrook is 10th at 1-2, much to the dismay of people on Facebook.

It's amazing we still have this problem in the Year of Our Lord 2026.

Hills & Hills & Hills

Saturday was the 8th annual Waldoboro Half Marathon, a race I created (and might move to Sundays going forward).

Brian Jansen and Leah Frost both repeated as champions on New England's Hardest Half Marathon. There's over 1,400 feet of elevation gain over 13.1 miles.

I'll be honest. I don't hate this idea.

Soccer rankings have a weird quirk where, because of the early harvest start, some County teams are ranked higher than they probably should be at the beginning of the year. I should probably find a fix for it, but it sorts itself out by about now. If you adjusted Fort Fairfield, who has played 8 games, for a standard 5 game output like most teams have played, they've be in the 30s or so instead of 9th, which is still pretty good!

As for Madawaska, you could probably adjust them down as well, but they've only played 6 games and have opened up a lead in the Heal Points. They might be a legit top 10 team, but they're probably inflated by a win over Easton.

While rankings are fun, the seeding inside your region is more important and Madawaska is in a battle with Easton for the 1 seed in D North.
