Windham Stuns Scarborough
The Eagles erase a 17-point deficit
Let's start with the Game of the Day, shall we?
In yesterday's preview, I said that Scarborough would probably need a couple of threes from Carter Ryan to knock off the champs and for a while, I was very wrong. Without AJ Moody, Windham struggled in the first half against Scarborough. They trailed 32-15 at the half, Tyrie James was sitting on 2 points, and things were dark.
But you aren't in a position to go for a three-peat if you can't come back and come back they did, even without Moody, who is essential to what they do.
But also essential is Tyrie James, who will very likely be a finalist for Mr. Basketball. James scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and Windham answered a late Scarborough run with an 11-1 run of their own to pull off the comeback.
Michael Hoffer was there.

Cheverus standout Kylie Lamson entered last night's game against Gorham needing 16 points for 1,000 on her illustrious career. With inside of 2 minutes to go, Lamson got a steal and then...
She finished with 17 and Cheverus beat Gorham 48-44.
A game that wasn't Game of the Day, but jumped out at me as one worth watching was the Mt. Ararat/GNG girls game and had it been at Mt. Ararat, I probably would have gone (Tuesdays are crazy for the day job and it's hard to get to a game that isn't close to my house). Well I wish I had.
Freshman Bryn Gilmore beat the buzzer at halftime, the game went overtime, and it finished with this wild sequence at the end of overtime (video clips on NFHS don't require a subscription)

That's Gilmore with the game winner. She finished with 22 points.
The win gives GNG some valuable Heal Points that are very clean, as York is the only other team in B South that plays Mt. Ararat. GNG is now back in the driver's seat for the 1 seed. They have a 14.1% chance of going unbeaten, which would give them the 1. At 17-1, they're 89.6% to get the 1. At 16-2, it's a coin flip.

If you're wondering, 43 teams in the state have locked up a bye.
The Pine Tree boys entered last night's game averaging 76 points a game, third best in the state, and facing a defense that's...not been stout, thus far, giving up 68.5. So this score probably shouldn't be a surprise.

Benjamin Christman drilled 7 3's, Collin Verrill scored 24 points, and Pine Tree put up a 31-point quarter to hit the century mark.
I'm sure Facebook is handling it well.

This is a fascinating story from the A's move to Vegas that is part awesome and part the worst sequel to Moneyball ever.
For reasons that don't exactly make a lot of sense, the A's trademark application has been rejected.
The USPTO argues “athletics” is an overarching term that is too broad to be trademarked. In trademark law, a description of what service the team provides and its geographic location is not sufficient. While the name refers to a professional team in Las Vegas, the USPTO argues there are too many other possible uses. In theory, others may need to use “Las Vegas” and athletics to describe their business.
Ok, but this has been a Major League Baseball franchise for over 100 years.
So I guess it's fair game to sell Athletics merch.
Here at Last Dive Bar, we support ATHLETICS.

ATHLETICS belong in all communities.
So we’re relaunching a tee we did when we filed for the trademark BEFORE anyone else did.

What you don't want to do is infringe on someone else's registered trademark, because that would be really stupid.

The Spruce Mountain boys started this season a little slowly, as sometimes happens when multiple starters play key roles on a football team that makes a run to the state championship game, but it didn't take a fancy Model to realize that losing 2 games by a combined 5 points to two good teams on the road wasn't exactly cause for concern. Sure enough, they've won 6 straight, including a slugfest on New Year's Eve. They're sitting 3rd in the Heal Points, but project as the most likely 2 seed.

They'll host a Madison team that lost to the same 2 teams Spruce did, but at home by a combined 16. So just by losses in common, the edge has to go to Spruce. Add the football hangover, Cai Dougher's return, and the 8th best scoring defense in the state, and you've got an edge for the Phoenix.

The rest of the Model's picks for today's games are after the jump.
