Football Quarterfinal/Semifinal/Regional Final Friday
Playoffs!
After a weather delay, we finished off the Regional Finals in soccer and field hockey. Skowhegan won another field hockey Regional Title. That's...I've lost count, but it's something like 20 of the last 21. 22 of the last 23?
They're going to play Cheverus, who won with some overtime dramatics, courtesy of Brooke Bunelle.

Brewer's Oli Higgins is drawing some attention in advance of basketball season.
Is Maine a basketball hotbed? People are asking.

First Cooper Flagg, now 6'9" sophomore Oli Higgins... is Maine officially becoming a basketball hotbed?
Higgins is already drawing comparisons to the #1 pick, playing with a relentless motor and gritty athleticism that's impossible to ignore.

I really like those Maine jerseys.
It's also worth noting that, while Higgins is a sophomore, numerous people are saying that this year's incoming freshman class might be the best one in a long time, perhaps ever.
I put that to Travis Lee on the podcast and he was quick to make the distinction that there's levels to being an impact player right away.
Speaking of Cooper, he made headlines this week with a comment that this 2-6 Mavs start is the most he's lost ever.

When you consider that his teams lost a total of 8 games over the last 4 years, 2-6 is going to take some adjusting.
You should be aware of the Jaylen Brown hair controversy.
Game of the Day
There's a number of quality options for Game of the Day. The Class C quarterfinals are today, featuring a rematch of the Wells/Gardiner overtime classic from earlier this year. The Stax Index prefers Bangor and Oxford Hills in an A North semi. Westbrook gets to prove they're for real when they host Marshwood.
But for my money, you can't do any better than Kennebunk and Falmouth.
This has recently become quite the rivalry. Last year, Falmouth beat Kennebunk in the state title game to finish their surprising undefeated season. Some said that was an upset (Sports Illustrated). Others didn't (me). Then in Week 1, Kennebunk got some revenge, beating Falmouth 14-10.
Today's the rubber match.
Kennebunk is 7-1 with the one loss coming to the top seeded Westbrook. Falmouth has given up 3 points in their last 3 games. Total. This is two of the top 10 defenses in the state, so scoring will likely be at a premium.
The Model likes Falmouth by 2.7.
The Model's picks for today's games are after the jump.
