Down Goes Cheverus
Another unbeaten team falls by the wayside
So...last night was a lot. Let's get started.
I went to the Leavitt and Medomak boys game. The Leavitt boys have been no stranger to close games this year. They went triple overtime against Poland and went to just one overtime period in their other Poland game and also against GNG and Lincoln Academy. Why mention that? Oh no reason.
In a back-and-forth defensive struggle, Medomak seemed to be in control in the final minute, but they struggled from the free throw line and Leavitt capitalized. They traded buckets in the overtime period. But let's go to final seconds of overtime with the score tied at 43.
There's a couple of things here. First, I don't love the foul call. There's definitely contact on the play, but I think you swallow the whistle and let the game go to double overtime because why play only one overtime when you can play two? But there's also a strange sequence with a second left where Leavitt is trying to pull off a buzzer-beater. Colin Schlobohm catches the pass from Trent Holst juuuuust out-of-bounds.

The refs huddle and give Medomak the ball on the sideline with no time coming off the clock, which was confusing, because everyone I spoke to assumed the ball would either return to the baseline or 0.3 would have to come off the clock. But apparently not. I talked to a couple of different refs who went to the rule book for clarification.

If the ball had just gone into the stands, it would have been a throw-in violation and the ball would have returned to the baseline. But since the ball touched a player who was out-of-bounds, the throw-in ended and it became an out-of-bounds violation and the ball went to the sideline. And since the ball wasn't touched in-bounds, the clock never should have started.
They got it right. At least that part.
Medomak survived 44-43. Kollin Donlin led all scorers with 20. Colin Schlobohm had 18 for Leavitt and they all seemed to be clutch.
At halftime, I checked in with Buzz Media to get a score from the girls game and...oh boy.

When I checked in later, they had a different clock.

And then the score didn't get reported because they lost power entirely and didn't finish the game. The scoreboard went out in the second quarter and the power went out twice before failing for good and forcing them to call it.
From what I've heard they will resume it this afternoon. You're not going to believe this, but there's a difference of opinion as to where they should resume play.
Back to the rule book!

In the Game of the Day, the Biddeford girls took down unbeaten Cheverus in a huge statement win for the Tigers. Biddeford got 20 points from Natalia Silva and 17 & 9 from Jordyn Crump as their cold shooting night woke up in an explosive third quarter to take control.
Drew Bonifant was there.

Biddeford's win sets up an epic final day of the season. Cheverus will face South Portland for the 1 seed and Biddeford will take on Sanford for the 3 seed.

The consensus this year has been that Miss Basketball is Maddie Provost's award to lose and while Kylie Lamson has been making a strong case for consideration, I think Provost is still the leader. Especially after last night. Against Belfast she drilled 11 3's and erupted for a career-high 49 points.

Up North, Quinn Pelletier and Aden Jeffers faced off in a battle between two of the best players north of Bangor (or anywhere in the state). Fort Kent won the matchup at their place in early January by 3 and last night, Madawaska got their revenge in front of a packed house.
Quinn Pelletier scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half and the Owls won 57-53. They'll be the 2 seed in D North. Fort Kent will be the 3 in C North.

They open up more trade flexibility by getting under the first apron.
They reduce their tax penalty from $39.5 million to $17.7 million.
They have four second-round picks left to help duck the tax. pic.twitter.com/JBuRNoE9kr
Cooper had 36/9/6 in his first game against the Celtics. He's really been on a tear the last couple of games. You could even say a historic tear.
Cooper Flagg has produced three straight 30-point games, becoming the first teenager in NBA history to accomplish the feat. Flagg is averaging 39.7 points (.577 FG%, .462 3FG%, .852 FT%), 10.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.3 blocks per game over his last three games. pic.twitter.com/sJ4Y6MjD09

This is the first Game of the Day where both teams are locked into their seeding. Should that disqualify it from consideration? Maybe! Counterpoint: it's a really good matchup that's also a quarterfinal preview.
MDI will be the 4 seed and Ellsworth will be the 5, which brings up my favorite thought experiment: if you're playing a team in a game that doesn't really count and you know you're playing them in the playoffs, how do you approach the game? The opportunity for gamesmanship is high.

The Model's picks for the rest of today's games are after the jump.
