Dirigo Drops 50/100

Our second 50 burger of the year

Dirigo Drops 50/100

Let's start with the headline performance...from Boothbay Harbor.

Dirigo's Abby Luczynski hit 6 threes and exploded for 50(!) points, Emma Witas added 19. Tatum French had 21 for Boothbay and Dirigo won 103-46.

That's the second 50-point performance of the year--both of them girls.

When you're scrolling the scores, every so often there's a score that elicits an audible response and we had one of those last night when Bonny Eagle beat Windham 83-75 in overtime.

But there's more.

Bonny Eagle beat Windham on a night they got 41 points from Tyrie James and needed a rally to come back down 11 in the 4th quarter and force overtime. And then they still won in overtime. It's a huge win for Bonny Eagle, who was led by Max Bouchard's 18 points. They had 5 players in double figures.

I went to Medomak Valley's 9th Annual "Paws for the Cause", the Panthers' version of a pink uniform game, with the fundraising to benefit the Lincoln Health Breast Care Program. It's a fun event with a varsity doubleheader against a rival, this time Lincoln Academy.

In the boys game, Lincoln Academy built a 13-point lead in the first half as Medomak couldn't make a shot. Then, the Panthers proceeded to erase that deficit with a 15-2 run to close the half, punctuated by this Kollin Donlin tip in at the buzzer. Donlin finished with 19 & 8.

They extended the run to 23-4 in the second half before Lincoln Academy stopped the bleeding. Medomak held on for a 58-51 win. Mason Nguyen led all scorers with 20.

In-between the games, there was a touching moment of silence for breast cancer victims.

In the first matchup, the girls game was a sloppy mess that got exciting at the end as Medomak rallied down 10 in the fourth. The rematch was...a sloppy mess that got exciting at the end. And because people asked, the Misery Rating (turnovers + fouls) was...100 (61 turnovers + 39 fouls). Only this time, Medomak's comeback came up short. Rowan Coffin hit 2 clutch threes down the stretch (she led everyone with 12) and Lillian Labrie went 4-4 from the line as the Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive.

I think we can write Marshwood, Freeport, and Yarmouth in Sharpie. That leaves, realistically, Medomak, Lake Region, and Leavitt for 2 spots with Cape, Lincoln, and Morse hoping to play spoiler.

Last night's Edward Little and Brunswick game was largely a battle for seeding, with the Eddies and Dragons essentially locked in the 2/3 range (with some disaster scenarios where they could fall to 4). There's probably not a huge difference between 2 and 3 in the seeding, unless you like your quarterfinal matchup better one way or the other.

You could look at is as a potential regional semifinal preview and if that's the case, things are promising. Akol Maiwen scored 25 points and Edward Little put the game away at the free throw line, outlasting Brunswick 65-61 in overtime and sweeping the season series.

Jimmy James (not from NewsRadio) was there.

Edward Little boys basketball outlasts Brunswick in overtime thriller
The Red Eddies clinch the game at the free-throw line, taking down the Dragons for the second time this season.

Staying in A North boys, Nolan Ames scored 19 points in Camden's win over Mt. Ararat, which would normally be relegated to the "Elsewhere" section below, except that he entered the game needed a mere 9 points to pass Tyler McFarland as Camden's all-time leading scorer (1,403). So congratulations to Nolan.

I think we also need an updated list of each school's record holder (and number). We could have a school leaderboard.

You've probably seen the report that Bill Belichick won't be a first ballot Hall of Famer, because of spite.

This is obviously stupid and petty and a terrible look for the NFL. But it's also a bad look for the Colts. Maybe they can hang a "We Made Belichick Wait a Year for the Hall" banner.

Jayson Tatum gave an interesting interview about his injury, recovery, and concerns about how he might fit in to the Celtics if/when he returns this season.

We're heading to boys B North, where MDI is heading to Hermon.

Hermon won the first matchup of the year, 92-84 in triple overtime. That's an unrealistic expectation.

MDI has one of the best offenses in the state. They're 6th in scoring at 72.4 ppg and 6th in %Perfect at 80.7%. They'll face one of the best defensive teams in the state in Hermon. They're 11th (1st in B) in scoring defense and 8th in the state in %Perfect at 77.5%.

As for the Tourney Odds, MDI needs to win out (or lose to Bapst and get help) to move up from the 4. Hermon has a lot more range.

Would one overtime be too much to ask for?

The Model's picks for the rest of today's games are after the jump.
