45/9/8

Cooper's gunning for that ROY

45/9/8

With the long gap between basketball and spring sports, there hasn't been a lot going on, outside of epic Elite Eight collapses and whatever the Red Sox are doing (apparently tanking for AJ Dybantsa?). Bu it's been a busy week for Cooper Flagg.

A couple of days after becoming the youngest player to ever score 50 points in a NBA game, Cooper became the first rookie since Allen Iverson to have back-to-back 40+ games with a 45/8/9 line agains the Lakers on National TV. The 96 in two games is the most by a rookie since Wilt. Wilt.

Kalshi now has Cooper as a slight favorite for Rookie of the Year.

The Mavs put out a fun video that has some familiar faces in it.

And our man will be at Hadlock (one presumes) on August 12th for a Bobblehead Day.

Stay tuned for next week's outlandish Cooper Flagg stat!

There's a tragic story this week from the Greely football community.

Ryan Jennings, who was active in the Greely youth program, died while rescuing his children from a rip tide while on vacation in Florida.

Maine man drowns while saving children from rip current
Ryan Jennings, 46, died while holding his daughter above the water as a rip current pulled them away from the shore, according to his wife, who is pregnant with their fourth child.

It's hard to fathom something like this. It's a small thing, but if you'd like to help out, there's a GoFundMe campaign set up for the family.

After a short delay (thanks to some scheduling issues and whatnot), the podcast is back with CMCC women's coach Andrew Morong, who retired in March after 15 seasons and 4 National Championships.

This was a great conversation about what it takes to build a perennial contender and what athletes need to do to excel at the next level.

So I'm working on a new thing for spring sports. You know how we have live stats for the tournament? Well, I've been making a customized version of it that includes some features I've long wanted to add (more on that in the fall) and it's gone well enough that I also made a version for baseball and softball.

First: the new scoreboard has some features.

If you click on that "Submit" button, it'll give you some options. You can enter the final score (that will automatically update the Heal Points--which also has last season's Heals, in case you need it). Or you can enter a score mid-game. OR you can score the entire game, pitch-by-pitch.

If you do that (and you can play with it here), it'll update the scoreboard in mostly real time. It refreshes every couple of seconds.

And there will be a live view that's like the live stats for the tournament, but a lot easier to read (the basketball version will also be a LOT easier to read/follow).

These are all screenshots of dummy data. You get the idea.

Think of this spring as a stress test for future things. It already works pretty well, but you never know with stuff like this until you get it on its feet.

This will track pitch counts and stats for everyone and will pull from the rosters uploaded to the site and update player stats for everyone. You can score any game on the schedule. My longer-term goal is to have as many player stats as possible on the site for at least basketball, baseball, softball, and football. You know how much people love it when the conferences update their stats with leaders? There's really no reason we couldn't have that all season long.

You can upload a roster for any sport.

Here, for example, is Mt. Ararat's baseball roster from last season. Pronunciations!

For baseball, teams are required to use GameChanger for pitch count reasons and softball is more free to do what they want. This will do that and export a box score that's a little bit better than that GameChanger gives you, plus there's the added benefit of your parents not having to pay $14.99/month to see updates. This is also not wholly dependent on the team manager or whoever. It could be a parent in the stands or the play-by-play person doing the streaming or whoever. So use of GameChanger doesn't preclude using this.

Anyway, check it out. See if you like it.

There's a new shirt in the merch store, for those who remember games at the Mecca in Bangor.
